Heritage Festival

We’ll be performing in concert and leading workshops at this wonderful gathering of some of our favorite folks in the labor music world!

“The Western Workers Labor Heritage Festival is an annual celebration of the artistic and spiritual culture of labor and working men and women. It is held every year on Martin Luther King Junior weekend, a commemoration of the kind of social justice and economic change that this great leader so firmly endorsed. It’s a three-day festival of workshops, presentations, dance, film, graphic arts, spoken word and lots of music … practically anything that can be interpreted as an artistic expression of worker’s voices in the working world will be found at our festival.”

The Center on Conscience & War’s 75th Anniversary and International Conscientious Objectors’ Day Event
Busboys and Poets
14th and V
Washington DC

The Center on Conscience & War (CCW), with Veterans for Peace, is hosting an event for International Conscientious Objectors’ Day.

Enjoy the inspiring and fun music by Emma’s Revolution, and celebrate conscience brief reflections from Conscientious Objectors to war, including:

-Former Prisoner of Conscience, Maikel Nabil Sanad, founder of NoMilService, an organization working to support conscientious objectors in Egypt;
-Nolan Fontaine, Howard University Graduate Student, and National Guard Conscientious Objector; and
-Don Zientara, US Army Conscientious Objector, and owner of Inner Ear Studio in Arlington, VA.

The event is free, but offerings in honor of CCW’s 75th birthday and in support of our ongoing work with Conscientious Objectors will be most welcome.

“War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige as the warrior does today.”JFK

Let’s bring that “distant day” a little closer by celebrating this international holiday in honor of conscience!

“The Cost of Freedom: Kent & Jackson State 1970-2015”
A Commemorative Concert with Emma’s Revolution & Magpie

In May 1970, students demonstrated against the Vietnam War, at colleges and universities across the country. On May 4th, National Guard troops shot into a crowd of unarmed demonstrators at Kent State in Ohio, killing four and wounding 9. Less than two weeks later, police opened fire into a group of unarmed protesters at Jackson State, in Mississippi, killing two and injuring 12.

We commemorate these horrific events with music and readings from the time . . . and from today’s issues and headlines of race, violence, justice and peace.

We’ll be performing Saturday night at this weekend-long women’s music and comedy festival!

Performers include Antigone Rising, Poppy Champlin, Karma Mayet Johnson, Julia Weldon and Crys Matthews. Plus, vendors, workshops, outdoor activities and more.

And here’s a tidbit from the FAQ page: “It is believed that Harriet Tubman House (the white house near the camp entrance) was once a 'safe house’ stop on the Underground Railroad that carried African-Americans escaping from slavery to the north. A tunnel (sealed off in the 1960s) led from the cellar of the house down to the Susquehanna River. Once across the Susquehanna, it is only a short distance to the Mason-Dixon line, which was the boundary between slave states and freedom. Oh—and it might be haunted.”
